The Conference Room was the setting for the audience granted by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife, representative of the Minister, to the Country Director of the International Labour Organization and his collaborators.
During this meeting, the first of its kind, the Country Director came not only to pay his respects to the Minister, but also to present his offer of collaboration as an agent of the United Nations System. Under his mandate, he intends to contribute to the development of the forestry sub-sector, which accounts for 40,000 jobs, through the development of value chains. The ILO is ready to help him achieve the agenda he has set himself through the promotion of employment and enterprise, the guarantee of rights at work, social protection and the promotion of social dialogue.
The ILO wishes to make available a network of experts from around the world to promote a qualitative leap in terms of the diversity and quality of forest resources in terms of the value chain: timber value chain, wildlife product value chain, non-timber forest product value chain.
During the discussions, the various participants agreed to set up a collaboration platform to work on issues such as structuring employment in the forestry and wildlife sub-sector. In this respect, the ILO stressed the importance of taking stock of the employment situation, identifying problems and initiating dialogue.
MINFOF's Plenipotentiaries at these exchanges noted that the development of the sectors and the jobs they generate require a framework. For example, MINFOF's Centre de Promotion du Bois (wood promotion center), which works to promote wood species and train craftsmen, could benefit from support in this area. And in this respect, other government departments need to be included.
